Daniel H. Caldwell
Dan began his law practice exclusively representing defendants and insurance companies, and this is still a major focus of his practice. Dan has longstanding relationships with several clients who have relied on his expertise and litigation experience for almost three decades. In recent years Dan has also represented certain select plaintiffs in significant negligence actions and has expanded his practice to include transactional work for mineral and natural resource companies in the region.
Dan graduated from University of Virginia School of Law and returned to our region in 1978 after one year practicing law in Washington, D.C. Dan is licensed in Virginia and his practice encompasses general civil litigation, insurance defense, and all manner of negligence, products liability, and personal injury claims. He has also represented businesses in general business disputes, eminent domain, and breaches of contract.
Dan is AV® Preeminent™ client/peer review rated by Martindale-Hubbell. He is also a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference, which is the conference of federal district and circuit court judges that are within the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Community and Bar Service
Dan was instrumental in founding the William King Regional Arts Center, today known as the William King Museum. He served the organization as a founder and member of its Board of Trustees, including as President of the Board for over a decade. He is currently Trustee Emeritus.
Dan’s bar service has most recently included serving on the Virginia State Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission from 2006-2008, the Commission that was created to allow for lawyers and other non-lawyers to evaluate sitting judges’ performance on the bench.
Raised on a 250 acre farm in Fairfax County, Dan moved to Southwest Virginia when he was in high school. In 1999, Dan and his wife purchased one of Abingdon’s historic downtown homes, the Patton House, and completely renovated it from the ground up. Dan’s current interests are travel, perfecting his fly fishing technique, and catching more trout than Howard McElroy on their joint fishing trips.
